MAPIC 2023 welcomes Rituals CEO Raymond Cloosterman as keynote speaker

The global home, cosmetics and wellbeing brand’s CEO and Founder, Raymond Cloosterman, will deliver a keynote at MAPIC 2023 on his experience as founder and the brand’s latest initiatives on its ‘path to sustainable wellbeing’

Cannes, XX September 2023 – MAPIC, the world’s leading international gathering of the retail, leisure, food, and tech real estate communities, is pleased to announce its latest keynote speaker; Rituals Cosmetics CEO, Raymond Cloosterman. He will share insights on his own experience, Rituals’ meteoric growth, and sustainability initiatives driving the wellbeing brand’s mission. The keynote will be delivered at 14:00 on Wednesday, 29 November, in the Studio at the Palais des Festivals, Cannes.

Rituals Cosmetics is dedicated to sustainable and personal wellbeing in the luxury beauty industry. The brand was a foremost founder of integrating bath, body and home care into a single portfolio and has more than 1,000 stores, as well as 3,900 shop-in-shops and 5 urban spas (with the world’s first Mind Oasis) across 36 countries throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Having founded the brand in 2000, Cloosterman cites one of his proudest professional moments as opening the brand’s first physical store, in addition to opening the ‘House of Rituals’ flagship store in Amsterdam. For him the value of brick-and-mortar retail is unparalleled—and more evident than ever. For industry peers, Rituals is an example of a brand that scaled successfully and rapidly, with Cloosterman at the helm.

At MAPIC 2023, he will share the insights he has garnered from founding and building one of the world’s most prolific home, cosmetics and wellbeing brands—and how companies can embrace transparency and accountability for a more sustainable future of growth. At its core, MAPIC’s 2023 programme offers property players an unmissable window into sustainability initiatives that respond to consumers’ search for meaning and investors’ search for value.

Raymond Cloosterman comments, “Being part of this year’s MAPIC, where sustainable growth is front-of-mind, is a fantastic opportunity to exchange insight and learn from our industry peers. From our production to how we run our stores, Rituals prides itself on continuously striving to impact our world for the better.”

Francesco Pupillo, MAPIC Markets Director, adds, “We are delighted to welcome Raymond Cloosterman, and Rituals, as a keynote speaker to share his experience founding, growing and running such a successful global brand. MAPIC is a platform that has always been about insight and information exchange—and I believe brands and retailers of all types can learn something from Rituals.”

Leading sustainability in luxury beauty

In 2021, Rituals became a certified B-Corp, reflecting the brand’s leading status in bringing together beauty and wellbeing on the path to a sustainable future. It has also committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 50% in intensity by 2030 and achieving Net-Zero by 2050. To guide its practices, Rituals has implemented three sustainability pillars: Clean, Conscious and Caring. Respectively, these pillars prioritise, high-quality products with responsible ingredients, sustainable choices for packaging and business operations, and supporting and developing programmes that contribute to soulful societies. Examples of concrete measures the brand has taken include supporting Tiny Miracles, a foundation helping some of the most excluded communities in Mumbai break the poverty cycle, since 2011; introducing its refills programme in 2017; and creating the 90% natural original Ritual of Ayurveda collection in 2020. According to Rituals’ 2022 sustainability report, over the course of the year popularity of the refills concept saved 802,587 kg in materials, 32,871 GJ-eq in energy, 1,766 tons of CO2 -eq, and 19.3M litres of water. Through the ‘Be The Change’ campaign, Rituals reached their goal of selling 5 million refills and, in partnership with some of the world’s leading environmental organisations, will plant, protect or restore 5 million trees in return.

Following a thriving thirteen-year career at Unilever, Cloosterman found himself seeking opportunities in the field of brand strategies and new business, which resulted in today’s international success story: Rituals Cosmetics. With its unique combination of body cosmetics, a skincare line with mainly natural ingredients, and premium home care products, Rituals Cosmetics unites advanced technology with ancient traditions from all over the world, aiming to transform everyday routines – like bathing, shaving and drinking tea – into more meaningful moments.

Sustainability Lab at MAPIC 2023

MAPIC 2023 will also see the introduction of the brand new Sustainability Lab in the heart of the exhibition area—designed to equip attendees with the tools to pursue carbon reduction objectives as the world tightens its regulatory belt. ESG experts, including leading companies that provide certifications and suppliers of new sustainable technologies, will all be on hand to provide productive advice. By equipping both fledgling and established brands with the knowledge, tools and practicable actions to grow responsibly, MAPIC priorities both the future of the industry and our planet. In addition to environmental questions, the event will also address questions regarding the positive effect retail can have on the social fabric of our cities, as part of mixed-use development or urban regeneration.
